The Heart of the Story with Gary Metivier

Positive, inspiring stories of everyday people doing cool stuff.

Dec 17, 2019

In This Heart of the Story with Gary Metivier we take you inside the world of female wrestling. Young girls are turning out in record numbers for a chance to show what they can do in this sport. But in some states, they are finding themselves pinned by rules that keep them out of the game.

"I think boys and girls should both have the same chances, an opportunity. Nothing should stop the girls," Sydney Park, two time state champion, explains.

Sydney says the sport teaches her things she otherwise would miss out on.

“This sports gives you many life skills: being relentless, having goals and even if you don’t achieve them that year the year after you keep going, and you don’t give up. You push harder and harder every time and you learn what you are made of, you learn that you are stronger than what you thought.”

Her coach Jason Loyd is right there with them. After coaching his two sons he turned to focus to clubs with girls and is gaining national attention with his work ethic and message.

“Nationally we have introduced girls across the nation. Up until now primarily a male-dominated sport while the female athlete really had to struggle and almost one-up the boys just to keep their ability to compete.”
